Our World of Shopping
Oratorio with music composed by Roderick Skeaping commissioned for the Brighton Festival of 2001.
Our World of Shopping takes us through the day of a newly built 24 hour superstore. We begin with the optimistic chorus of the managers and shareholders who are confident that this new shopping experience will be everything that their customers could dream of. They are convinced that they are building “A New Jerusalem”. Customers, awaiting the opening, join in the chorus of approval for the new venture. (”We the People Have Spoken”) The one cloud on the horizon is the demonstration by a group of environmentalists, farmers and local small shopkeepers.
A song cycle with composer Roderick Skeaping about the parish churches of the Purbeck Hills. Originally for choir with piano accompaniment it was then performed with string orchestra in St George’s Church, Langton Matravers as a tribute to the late rector Robert Watton.
